An Introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies

Designed as a way of teaching viewers to find meaning and pleasure in works of art, these strategies are based on the work of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and veteran museum educator, Philip Yenawine.

(4 PDPs) Learning about Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) the principles of which guide the educational programming at the Museum.  Designed as a way of teaching viewers to find meaning and pleasure in works of art, these strategies are based on the work of cognitive psychologist Abigail Housen and veteran museum educator, Philip Yenawine.  Participants will be introduced to Housen’s theory of aesthetic development, discuss and analyze the strategies, experiment with the method in small groups, and discuss ways in which these strategies can enhance teaching and reinforce the state standards in Language Arts.
