Gingerbread House Festival adds a NEW element this year November 29-December 21, 2019!

We will be winding up our year-long celebration of nature and the 110th Anniversary of the Hartford Audubon Society with a “Winter Birds and Holiday Traditions” theme for our 9th Annual Gingerbread House Festival.  In fact, the Audubon’s annual Christmas Bird Count started out as an alternative to a tradition of that era to go hunting on Christmas Day.

Each year visitors to the festival gaze upon row after row of creative and colorful gingerbread creations, all made by regional artisans and bakers, students and community members, expert and beginner alike. Don’t forget to stop by “Ye Olde Gingerbread Shoppe” for the opportunity to take home a bit of the magic with many holiday themed gifts and treats.

Want to join in the fun and enter your own gingerbread creation in the show? We welcome all skill levels and there is no entry fee. Would you like to enter a masterpiece but don’t know how to begin?  Leading up to the festival The Wood will be offering gingerbread house workshops for all ages, providing a chance to learn the basics or design like a pro. Would you like to have your entry looked over by a judge?  Let us know when you drop it off and we will list your gingerbread creation as one of those to be looked over by our diverse panel of judges, Scot Haney, co-host of Better Connecticut on WFSB channel 3, Lucy Nalpathanchil, host of Where We Live on WNPR radio, and renowned local artist, Karen Rossi. This new element is a friendly “competition”.

Celebrate “Winter Birds” during the holidays this year and experience one of the largest gingerbread house festivals in New England.  The Wood, located on historic Old Main Street, provides the perfect holiday venue for showcasing the sugary artistic creations among sparkling lights and colorful decor. Musical performances, story time and craft events, even visits from Santa will be scattered throughout the festival providing patrons with an uplifting, peaceful and creative break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
