*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 08/20/2021
The Lutz Children’s Museum offers a summer day camp for elementary aged students running from June to August! This exciting and unique experience takes campers on an adventure around the world to investigate the arts and sciences. Your camper will explore natural surroundings at our beautiful nature preserve. An experienced museum educator will lead programs ranging from the fine and performing arts to hands-on science. Each day begins with hands-on and inquiry based learning activities that are student-centered. Afternoons are devoted to playtime, art, nature exploration, and field trips.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Camp starts on July 5, 2021 for children ages 6-10. Hours each day are from 8:30AM to 3:00PM, except on Fridays when we return from field trips at 5:00 PM. Camp is $225 per week for members and $275 per week for non members.

The Oak Grove Nature Center offers fifty-two acres of land with trails, a pond, covered bridge, and a teaching building. The distance from Lutz Children’s Museum to the Oak Grove Nature Center is 1.5 miles.

Camp 2021 Weekly Themes and Descriptions

1. Week 1 Out in the Forest (July 5th -9 th): This week, campers will discover wild things that make their homes amongst the trees. Join us as we hike through the forest in search of resident creatures. We will also meet and interact with animals who once lived in the forest and now reside at the Lutz Children’s Museum.

2. Week 2 Set Adrift to the Sea! (July 12th -16th): Campers team up as crewmates as we sail out to sea! We will learn nautical terms and travel the world as sailors, oceanographers and marine biologists to discover new lands and creatures.

3. Week 3 Ancient Animals (July 19th -23rd): Using the fossil record as a guide, campers step into the role of paleontologists to explore the amazing life that once lived on our planet. Get ready to encounter some of the animals that once walked on the land we now inhabit!

4. Week 4 Camper Conservationists (July 26th -30th): This week we become conservationists of our very own Oak Grove Nature Center. We will bring the awareness close to home as we discover how our actions have a major impact on the environment and what we can do to make our world a bit ‘greener’.

5. Week 5 Animal Behavior Enthusiasts (August 2nd -6 th): This week campers become ethologists and set out to study some of the wacky and zany behaviors that some animals exhibit! Campers will learn to observe and document animal behaviors in nature and by meeting some of the animals who live at the Lutz Children’s Museum.

6. Week 6 Our Home in the Cosmos (August 9th -13th): Planet earth formed from cosmic matter, and so did the plants and animals that live here! This week we will transform into geologists and astrobiologists to uncover the secrets of how our planet and it’s resident life forms came to exist.

7. Week 7 Curiously Camouflaged (August 16th -20th): We end the summer with a weeklong game of hide and seek. Campers will learn about wondrous camouflaging techniques found in nature, and will seek out animals known for their abilities to hide in plain sight! Field trips will be decided closer to summer when we know what facilities will be open and if they will be accepting group visits.
