Did you know that Vikings never wore helmets with horns? Or that the term “Viking” is actually a verb used by the Scandinavian people for when the men took time out of their summers to go “Viking?” Another etymology derives “viking” from the noun “vik”, meaning creek, inlet, or small bay.
Two related exhibitions will coincide at Mystic Seaport this spring. The Vikings Begin: Treasures from Uppsala University, Sweden, one of the world’s finest early Viking-age collections from the Gustavianum Museum of Uppsala University in Sweden opens May 19. The Vinland Map from the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, a highly debated parchment map that suggests Norse knowledge of the New World within mainland Europe before Columbus sailed also opens May 19.
On June 16-17, 2018, the Museum will be transformed in celebration of Viking culture, complete with trade demonstrations, performances, and on-the-water activities. Explore the exhibitions, sample Scandinavian fare, watch traditional faering sailing, and see a Nordic boat-building demonstration. There will be hands-on activities and games for children and adults throughout the day, and a special Planetarium show on Viking navigation. You’re guaranteed to have a fun and educational experience during these Viking Days at Mystic Seaport!
