HANDS ON HISTORY: TEXTILES, TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY

*The event has already taken place on this date: Sun, 04/24/2016
No need to travel all the way to Williamsburg to experience early America. The Historical Society of Glastonbury is always bringing history back to life right here in Connecticut.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

On Sunday, April 24th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Welles-Shipman-Ward House, 972 Main Street, South Glastonbury, the Historical Society of Glastonbury and guests from Sturbridge Village will be dressed in their colonial best, demonstrating 18th century textile crafts, tools and technology of the day. Demonstrations include shoe making, rope making, counted cross stitch, crewel embroidery, weaving, hand knitting and more.  These crafts were anything but a pastime for folks in the 18th century.  Learn about how people lived in the 18th century and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for life 200 years ago. Participation by children is welcome.  Let the “young ones” try carding wool, use the cricket loom, finger knit, or make their own colonial choker.  Other exhibitions include Native American technologies of flint knapping and spear throwing using a prehistoric atladl.  Join Gary Nolf, atladl throwing champion (also seen on David Letterman) and try your hand at using an atladl to spear a target.   The barns and shed will be open displaying the tools and technologies within.  Spend an afternoon with the Historical Society of Glastonbury taking in demonstrations, enjoying the Connecticut River Valley mansion built in 1755, and learning the history of skills and technologies that our not so distance ancestors used on a daily basis.    $5 admission per person includes demonstrations, entrance to the Welles-Shipman-Ward house, property, barns and shed.  Please check the website or our Facebook page for more information and the most current updates on this event.
