American Mural Project

The American Mural Project (AMP) is a nonprofit organization with an unusual initiative in education. At its center is the creation of the largest indoor collaborative artwork in the world—a mural 120 feet long, 48 feet high, and up to 10 feet deep. Nothing like it exists in the world. A tribute to American workers, the mural will be a visual history of the country over the past century through its workers—from heart surgeons to steel workers, athletes to ranchers, assembly workers to the fabricators of a 747. The mural itself will be an incredible product of work on the part of those creating it. Through partnerships with schools, other nonprofits, and professionals in a wide spectrum of fields—including NASA, Boeing, Habitat for Humanity, and HealthCorps—AMP has engaged more than 15,000 students and adults across the country in the creation of the mural through diverse art projects. An additional 30,000 to 40,000 participants from all 50 states are projected to work on the mural before it is completed. AMP owns two mill buildings and three surrounding acres in Winsted, Connecticut. Over the past few years, AMP has raised more than $1.4Million to match the $1 Million State of Connecticut challenge grant to undergo renovations to the first of two mill buildings, which includes raising the roof by nearly thirty feet. Work began in April 2017 and is expected to be completed by late 2018. Following completion, the mural will be installed and AMP will open its doors to the public. AMP will be a destination for school field trips, lectures, and workshops with local artists and artisans, and smaller, temporary exhibits and art shows. Education programs are the primary focus beyond the mural exhibit and will include experiential projects for visitors, on- and off-site projects for schools, as well as internships and a Worker-in-Training (WIT) program for high school students through recent college graduates. In the more distant future, once Phase II and III renovations have been completed for the Visitors Center and outdoor space, AMP plans to offer summer camps, extended workshops, and a concert series in the outdoor park.
