PrimeTime "Inventions" For Grades K-3
*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 01/21/2017
Saturdays at Talcott allow students to work on projects and in areas that complement their STEM work in school. From Robotics to Bugs to Solar Energy, students pick an area to study, and work in groups to learn, build skills and create new skills.
Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.
Find out what's inside those busted devices at home. Bring in stuff for our take-apart lab, and while we can't guarantee we can get it running, we will find out how it ticks. You'll learn how to make simple machines and complex gadgets with LEGO and you can even earn a "PrimeTime Patent" for your invention!

Individual Class Information:
1/7: Bizarre Real Estate
What makes a home? In short, it’s any structure that keeps you protected from the elements, which means that a home can be made anywhere and out of anything. For the first Saturday of Inventions, PrimeTimers will analyze different homes from all over the globe - homes on water, in the ground, in trees, and in the SKY! Weather permitting, we’ll then head outside and put our builder hats on as students get the chance to make an igloo with an entertainment system, a pool and a jungle gym! Well, maybe not all that, but our imagination is the only limitation, so dress warm!
1/14: Tinkering Time
Bang! Smash! Clink! Don’t worry! That’s not the sound of your TV breaking, just systematically being taken apart piece by piece… or maybe we’ll just start with the toaster. The best way to learn how something works is by slowly taking it apart and then putting it back together (a.k.a Tinkering). PrimeTimers will experiment and tinker with every day tools while learning about proper tool safety at the same time. After lunch, PrimeTimers will step into the “construction zone” and use their onsite training to build a home worthy of Connecticut’s most elite birds. Some objects will be provided, but feel free to bring in old cell phones, VCR’s, clocks, anything!
1/21: Roller Coasters
Whee, Whee, WHEE! Throw your hands up in the air cause down we go! Some of the most fun inventions are the ones we get to ride - ROLLER COASTERS! They’re high, fast, and almost make you sick….but in a totally rad way. There is a lot of science behind making roller coasters ready to ride. On the last Saturday of our Inventions unit, PrimeTimers will contemplate some of the physics that goes into designing a roller coaster. Then the real fun begins - they’ll create a roller coaster of their own for park guest Monsieur Ping Pong. Join us for this topsy turvy ride!
